Have we made a "trailer park" pun yet? I dunno...

Live action Rurouni Kenshin movie is a thing that's happening.

Trailer for Ridley Scott's Prometheus
Looks okay, but they've been waffling about whether or not this is really a prequal to Alien, and whether or not it is, I hope that doesn't mean I can guess that it'll end with, "...and then everyone died"

When even Gary Busey getting mauled to death by a barn owl is tepid and uninteresting, you've seriously failed as a filmmaker.

I'm worried about this. Originally it sounded like a SF movie set in the ALIEN universe but otherwise unconnected, which I'm all for. But it's looking more and more like this is an ALIEN prequel that has humans poking around in the derelict before the Nostromo arrives and may even attempt to "explain" the Space Jockey, which is a TERRIBLE, TERRIBLE idea.

Pretty sure the Space Jockey's already been explained somewhat n various tie-in comics/novels/games/whatever, though it sounds like some depictions contradict eachother, and even Scott has seemed to be intentionally vague on the subject.

Going by the trailer though, it looks like the film will be more concerned with freaking people out rather then providing lots of exposition

Hey, freaking me out sounds like a good night at the movies! Looks like a solid SF flick.

The issue isn't exposition, it's laboriously spelling out what was better left mysterious and alien. Apparently NOTHING is allowed to be weird and inexplicable anymore, it all has to have an origin. And I've been hearing even worse rumours about how this is going to retcon the whole xenomorph/space jockey mythos to be way too human-centric. Because EVERYTHING IN THE UNIVERSE THAT HAPPENS IS ABOUT HUMANS.

Turns out the space jockey had an abusive father, that's why he left his planet to start space jockeying.

I'm perfectly fine with mysteries and weirdness being broken if it's well written. I mean, this isn't exaclty a Lovecraftian Elder God here. IIt's an alien, a movie monster. It's not like it's a character with some past we can be sympathetic to. It kills people and goes BLAAAAHHHHHGGG. And the Space Jockey? He's a corpse by the beginning of both films. Doesn't really seem like there's much to mess up in either case

You can have your preferences and I'll have mine, let's just leave it at that.

And too human-centric? The Alien mythos hasn't been really human-centric already? Huh? Are people complaining about the Xenomorphs not getting enough lines?

Either way, don't really want to argue about it. I'll be more inclined to to debate when it's out.

Did he live in a double wide in a trashy trailer park and did he have big dreams of someday opening a restaurant with his wife and mom? If he was that kind of space jockey, the alien infestation thing was inevitable.

Ehh, doesn't Ridley Scott have a history of going back and explaining/exposing things that would have been much better left unexplained and mysterious? (Cough ... Blade Runner ... "Deckard was really a Replicant all along" ... cough.)

Interesting...but would not a Xeno centric story consist of jumping out of shadows onto unsuspecting humans, implanting future face huggers, and getting ventilated by space marines with 10mm pulse rifles?

Scott lays out the backstory concept for the derelict itself in the Alien DVD director's commentary. I'll be interested to see if he sticks with it.

You can watch the first five minutes of Haywire here. I'm linking to the Badass Digest story because it lets you just plug in your birthday and watch, as opposed to the Hulu site which requires you to have a login.

This is the Steven Soderbergh action movie starring MMA fighter Gina Carano, done with the obvious goal of having believable action sequences. The one we see here does indeed look pretty great. Carano's acting...I'm worried about. She undeniably has a strong screen presence and she's easy on the eyes, but she can't seem to deliver lines naturalistically. Then again, she's not as completely awful as I was worried she might be.
