Oh, yeah. The 90's gamera kicks more ass that is allowed by law. Well, Hollywood law, mayhaps.

You know, maybe they do. It's been quite a while since I watched the third one, so maybe I just forgot.

I just wish Gamera's scales didn't do that venetian-blind trick. If they could digitally edit that back out again, it'd be a lot easier to stay caught up in the action instead of seeing it as movie effects.

Re: Are the Gamera movies as good as the Godzilla movies?
That's kind of been Gamera's thing: get stomped by the other monster, sit out part of the movie, come back, get stomped some more, but then pull out a win at the buzzer. The most egregious example was Viras impaling Gamera in the gut and clearly going deep into his body cavity, yet Gamera managed to fly high into the sky and spin so fast he dislodges Viras...without bleeding to death or succumbing to shock or trauma. I will admit, AoL does have it happen more than perhaps any other Gamera movie. I think my being used to it happening let me glide over that, and my younger self's fascination with anime got me over the sudden appearance of the new superweapon, although I love that they explain why it happened that way in the sequel. Well, that and the fact of the Gamera vs. Queen Legion title fight might just be the best giant monster fight ever. I've only seen it once, but I'm pretty sure SoS is right about the Gyaos part. I don't recall the Irys part being mentioned, though. But yeah, the consequences of the Mana Blaster are the eruption of Gyaos around the world and I do believe the characters bring this up. I really enjoyed the third one, but after it was over I realized how little monster stuff there was in it, especially compared to the previous one. That it managed to carry me along in spite of this says a lot about its quality. Still, that fight in the train station was epic, and Gamera vs. the two Gyaos near the beginning had my jaw on the floor. ----------------------- I may need to rewatch these again this weekend...

I'm skimming through the third one right now... and man, without having seen the other two it is tough to follow all those characters.
Iris is totally an anime monster.

Godzilla apologists used to attack both Legion and Iris (especially Iris) as being too "anime" in their appearance. But then again, the same fans attacked Monster X in Godzilla: Final Wars as being too "Ultraman." Fans, go figure.

Yeah, the Gamera series is a true trilogy in that it is difficult to appreciate everything that happens without having gone through them from 1 to 3.

I'm not sure that the complaint was that Monster X was too "Ultraman," but more that he was really similar to a specific Ultraman monster, Seabozu.

Monster X looked to me like a combination of Seabozu and Kilieroid from Ultraman Tiga.

Seabozu's head looks similar to that of Blue Oyster Cult's Cultosaurus Erectus

Re: Are the Gamera movies as good as the Godzilla movies?
After watching the "Ultraman" series last year, I definitely understood the comparisons to Seabozu that Monster X drew, at least in appearance.
Irys definitely seems anime-ish, but I'm not sure I see that with Legion. If anything, I thought the Queen could easily have been an Ultraman monster.
----------------- Yeah, all this talk...definitely watching at least one of them tomorrow.
