Random Acts of Violence Against Randomness
To start this off, I present you all with an e-mail from Nathan Shumate with regards to Cold Fusion Video and all of its subsites, including my own (and I assume the B-Masters Cabal Blog):

Re: Random Acts of Violence Against Randomness
Well, crap. Do you Cold Fusioneers at least have backups on your home systems that can be uploaded to a new server in an emergency such as this? Or is that stuff just all gone now, *poof* into the ether? I know there's a nearly complete spare copy of the B-Masters' Grand Index hidden somewhere in the bowels of Braineater, so that's one thing we won't have to rebuild completely from the ground up.

Re: Random Acts of Violence Against Randomness
I personally have *nothing* left. There's a possibility that the domain provider *may* recover something further down the line, but I won't hold my breath for it to happen. Nathan said that he'd be rebuilding his active sites, but Cold Fusion Video is gone for good.

Web archives, my man. I'm very sorry to hear about this crash (and was wondering what was up with your sites), but in this modern internet age that data isn't all gone. You may not be able to get back everything, but among other such services, try putting your web address into the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine. See, here's your review of Seven to One! And Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla! I find a bunch more, too, just go back to whatever week you posted the review.

Re: Random Acts of Violence Against Randomness
And whatever you do find that way, make an archival copy to keep on your own computer at home so that you won't be screwed if anything like this ever happens again. All of my reviews exist in four different forms: the html copies on the web, the html copies on my home computer, the word-processor files from their original composition, and ten or so huge three-ring binders full of printouts of the latter. If worst ever came to absolute worst, I could open up those binders, re-type everything, and re-convert to html. It would suck a whole lot, but I could do it.

Re: Random Acts of Violence Against Randomness
I used to have all of my movie reviews (when my site was on Geocities and dealt with all genres) on my home computer...and then the HD crashed and those were lost. I'll have to take a few hours and look up everything via the Wayback machine and see what I can find.

Re: Random Acts of Violence Against Randomness
Everything I put online is precisely mirrored on my home system -- I just sync them with an FTP-capable directory comparison tool. Everything starts out local and copying it to the website is just the final step. If you write the HTML by hand, that's the way to do it. But if you use some kind of content management ware, like wordpress or whatnot, I'd guess that would be harder to set up. In that case I guess you need to add an extra backup step where you copy the site to your local system afterwards. And you probably do want to back up the actual finished online content, not the raw review text that goes into the templates.

Re: Random Acts of Violence Against Randomness
I read too many El Santo movie reviews. Last night I dreamed I was in a crowd of people waiting to get autographs from Michelle Bauer and Shannon Tweed, while an aged woman/spider monster was in the next room reducing her male victims to withered masses of skin and bones.

What a disaster. My condolences to Nathan and the other Cold Fusioneers.

Re: Random Acts of Violence Against Randomness
I Checked the Way-Back Machine and I only lost the last 8 reviews. I'll try to recover those little by little. Should I start over, perhaps I'll branch out more like my first webpage.

Re: Random Acts of Violence Against Randomness
Terrible news. I would hav e ahard time starting over in such a situation, even if I had back-ups.
In other news, I had a dream last night that I was diagnosed with brain Cancer. I chose not to have it treated, because i knew the cost of doing so would destroy my families future finances, and it was mor eimportant that my daughter went to college and had a better future than surviving a few extra years. Instead, I just went about my mundane life waiting to die in agonizing pain.
Damn, that was one depressing dream.

Re: Random Acts of Violence Against Randomness
That's awful, Easy E. Must have been something in the air last night. I had a dream that my sweet, drug-free, 5' 3" wife was high on PCP and had chased my sons and I up the stairs with a butcher knife. I had locked us in my son's room, and was on my cell trying to reach the police, holding my infant son KO Leo and keeping KO Danny behind me when she started coming through the door, Jack Nicholson-style. She was all bug-eyed and nuts. She finally got through the door and rushed me. I managed to grab her knife hand, but then she started biting me! That's when I woke up. It was awful.

Dang, that would be a terrifying dream. Then you wake up right next to the psycho who had been chasing you!

Re: Random Acts of Violence Against Randomness
If I had to venture a guess, the fact that we had an argument right before bed probably played some part in it...
