And to continue from the last thread...
Instant improvement for Paint Your Wagon?
Paint Your Gorilla

Jesus's Son - Just watched this again and I'm still struck by how naturalistic Billy Crudup was. And I wonder if it was being shown on cable to coincide with the release of Watchmen, which would be an odd tie-in to make at best...

Well, they washed Lee Marvin, but I wouldn't recommend it on that...

...

When my former college roommate Andy and I watched Day of the Animals he misread a credit for "Colors by Panavision" and "Todd A/O Cameras" to read "COLORS BY TODD!"; from then on we kept making jokes about Todd getting clawed or bitten by the various animals he had to paint before filming. Needless to say, Todd would be the poor SOB stuck painting the gorilla before any closeups.

I can see it now..."Paw of the Big Damned Gorilla" -- a podcast dedicated to films that have a gorilla for no damned reason but are still awesome because any film could be made better with the insertion of a gorilla for no damn good reason.

Or PotBDGaPDtFthaGfNDRbaSAbAFCbmBwtIoaGfNDGN for short.

WATCHMEN - Once again, haven't posted my full review on Reel Opinions yet (will do so tonight), but had to let my thoughts known.

This movie felt very, very long, but overall I was happy with it. I was spellbound by a number of scenes, and thought it overall was a very powerful movie, except for some missteps. I also have to say, it has one of the best opening credit sequences in recent memory.

That being said, I don't know how the public will respond to it. This seems to be a movie made for a very specific audience, and I can't picture it reaching Dark Knight or even Iron Man levels in terms of box office draw. It's a little too "in" to appeal to "John and Jane Q. Public who does not read comics".

Still, greatly enjoyed it.

I just saw it. I am having a hard time forming an overall reaction. I admired it's craft, and the sheer effort it took to pull it off, but think maybe there was a better cut left on the editing floor - or maybe that the best cut was probably way too long to be shown. Still, I loved seeing things on the screen lifted right from the book, and hearing the better dialogue.

I Drink Your Blood - that was much better than I thought it was going to be. I expected a cheesy, gory, exploitation flick. I got that, with some better-than-average explo. acting and an overall much more polished than expected effort besides.

Bird With the Crystal Plumage - the scene with the crazy cat-eating painter put this over the top from "pretty good" to "great" in my book. For Argento's first work as director/producer/main creative influence, it's a lot better than some of his later (but not contemporary) stuff. Far superior to Deep Red for instance, although I haven't seen Four Flies.

Probably. Over here, Little Children is constantly showing on Foxtel right now, on account of both Jackie Earle Haley and Patrick Wilson being in it. They're also showing Hard Candy, with Wilson, quite a bit.

...Jeez, between those two titles and Running with Scissors, Patrick Wilson sure has been in a lot of movies about pedophiles.

Finally posted my review. I'm a bit less enthusiastic on reflection, now that I've had time to think back on it. I'm still recommending the film as an experience, and for the ideas that the story represents. But, the more I think back on it, the more cold and impersonal the story seems a little.

This was a very hard review for me to write, as I tried to sort my feelings and thoughts together. Hope it's not too jumbled.

Yes Madam! - Here's a good example of a movie whose reputation rests practically on one scene: the wince-inducing final fight at the mansion. Excellent work from Michelle Yeoh and Cynthia Rothrock, not to mention Chung "Crazy Eyebrow Guy" Fat. The minor set pieces are fun, too. However, the original international dub and a group of friends is needed to get through the filler scenes.

Interesting-to me it's more coherent than Deep Red, but not as good, if that makes any sense. Argento had to grow into his insanity.

The Legend of Hell House: I decided watch this one after reading El Santo's review of it, and it's a pretty decent little film; of the cast, I think the terribly young Pamela Franklin as Florence Tanner gives the strongest performance, with some truly amazing hamming on the part of Roddy McD backing her up.

I love the hell out of this movie. Especially Roddy's attitude throughout. :)
