The Long Goodbye: The first time I saw this, I really liked it, but I was left vaguely disconcerted by how powerless Gould's Marlowe seemed in comparison with how he's portrayed in Chandler's books. Upon repeat viewing, I find I like this Marlowe a lot more---not that I didn't like him before---because despite his powerlessness, he remains essentially a decent and amiable guy, up until the final moments of the film, when he finally lashes out at some of the awfulness around him.

Also, the scoring is brilliant.

This is one of my favorites; I avoided it for the longest time because I thought Altman would end up making fun of one of my favorite books, but when I finally sat down and watched the damn thing, it just really worked for me. And that ending is so great.

Yeah. Pretty much. I love that movie, but not on story merit. :)

The story actually makes sense in the manga, where it has six phonebook-sized volumes to play out.

This means that the weirdest thing about Akira is that they adapted it as a 2-hour movie instead of a TV series.

Having read the first volume, somehow I can't see that story getting past the executives at that point.

And the weirdest part about the Akira movie: the original writer of the manga adapted it.

And directed it...while he was still writing the manga. I don't think the manga actually finished until a few years after the movie premiered

Maybe little bit more interesting and entertaining than Mixed-Up Zombies, but it's hard to be sure when Netfux Instant's copy has the sound out of sync by FIFTEEN SECONDS. I've heard of sloppy MOS dubbing but that's ridiculous. Anyway, you'd still probably get more spoof-superheroics value from any contemporaneous six-minute subepisode of Underdog.

But Underdog doesn't have Carolyn Brandt.

Or Kogar The Swinging Ape.

I must say that ten minutes from the end, I thought the plot was going into a dead zone with nothing left to do, but the day was saved by Kogar. Never before have I seen a gorilla suit introduced with such perfect timing.

And Underdog's one weakness isn't bullets.

That actually explains a lot. :D

I certainly know I couldn't. Frankly, I think most every film could be improved by the director's inability to pass up a free gorilla.

I know I would have actually been okay with Crash had its plot suddenly taken a completely gratuitous detour just to work in a gorilla carrying a woman off. Hell, maybe Matt Dillon could have saved Thandie Newton from a gorilla instead of an exploding car.

Or even better, you could've just replaced Matt Dillon with a gorilla. Lord knows it couldn't have made the racial commentary any less subtle, and we'd have Thandie Newton being saved from an exploding car by a gorilla. Everybody wins!

I really wish you were talking about the Cronenberg Crash right now.

Either way, I vote the gorilla sequence be filmed in fast-motion and accompanied on the soundtrack by "Yakety Sax".

So many things would be improved by this process.

But not Paint Your Wagon, because there's just no help for that.
