In fact the Peter Cushing Doctor Who movies were based on the first two Dalek stories with William Hartnell, at which point no clear backstory for the Doctor had been established. The producers of the films went ahead with the assumption that he was a human named Doctor Who.
Time Lords weren't mentioned until the Troughton era, IIRC.

Ginger Snaps: Sneaking in before the clanging, this one actually lives up to the "better than you'd expect" hype. A solid goth-girl fantasia on the theme of Howling with a fairly logical plot and a completely nonsensical ending (mandated, no doubt, by the government of Canada ... they have a reputation to uphold when it comes to nonsensical endings, you know).
