Post The Grab Bag That Time Forgot
Well, the Tony Awards were announced today...

And Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark was pretty much shut out, except for some technical awards. People were actually thinking that the revised show might have had a shot at some recognition, but it was not to be.

Oh well. The show's gone on to prove to be a success. After the disaster the first 7 months or so of the show was, I'm sure Marvel is happy that the show is still running, and drawing in big crowds daily. It's also no longer the biggest joke currently playing on Broadway. (That would be Ghost, the musical based on the Patrick Swayze/Demi Moore movie.)

From Berger's comments in the previous thread - can't speak for the US but The Avengers is basically shattering box office records wherever it goes. It's made over $200 million worldwide and has still yet to open in some mammoth markets; the USA, China, Russia and Japan.

Like most Marvel flicks a standalone Hulk will live or die based on choice of director, but Ruffalo is so good in The Avengers that he's basically the movie's Wolverine; pretty much everyone I know has pegged him as the best thing about the movie.

If at first you don't succeed...

Universal is going to try their luck again with a Van Helsing reboot, this time with Tom Cruise as the title character, instead of Hugh Jackman.

If I weren't at work I'd do a spit-take just now.

I wonder if they'll keep the running joke about being friar this time around.

Post Re: The Grab Bag That Time Forgot
And this review gives me one more reason to be positive.

It sounds like something dreamed up in the fevered brain of a Comic-Con attendee: A sci-fi story that features an unholy alliance between "Star Trek's" Borg and "Doctor Who's" Cybermen.

That very story will arrive in May, courtesy of an IDW comic book. According to a Monday press release from the company, "Star Trek: The Next Generation/Doctor Who: Assimilation2" will feature "an unholy alliance" between the two villains. This sounds like an excellent idea for a comic book and, not just because two races of relentless, mechanized villains are better than one, but because an on-screen depiction of that kind of epic tale would be unworkable (especially given that "TNG" ended in 1994) and hugely expensive.

So who you gonna call when two mechanical races team up to bring disaster to humanity? Jean-Luc Picard and the Doctor, obviously.

In the eight-issue series, "Picard and the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise find themselves joining forces with the Doctor and his companions, with the fate of the galaxy hanging in the balance," according to IDW. (Could we get the Cylons to stop by? Is that asking too much? Just wondering.)

This Cybermen-Borg alliance is exciting to ponder, of course, but it leads to a host of nerd-tastic questions: Whose will provide transportation? (The "Trek" folks, apparently; the press release says the Doctor will be "traveling with" Picard and company). Which villainous race will have the upper hand, or will the Borg and Cybermen be too logical to try to assert dominance over each other? Will Picard utter his iconic "Make it so" phrase in the Doctor's presence? Will the sonic screwdriver be used aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise?

I can't ponder these questions anymore. My brain is already melting at the thought of these two franchises coming together to create outer-space goodness. But before I log off, here are a few final details:

The 32-page "Star Trek: The Next Generation/Doctor Who: Assimilation2" will be written by Scott and David Tipton, authors of "Star Trek: Infestation." The authors will have "a helping hand from longtime 'Doctor Who' writer Tony Lee," the comic "will feature fully painted artwork from J.K. Woodward," there will be a "rare" wrap-around photo cover and artist Joe Corroney will create a variant cover "featuring the Doctor and friends aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise," according to IDW.

FYI: That might be your only chance to see the Doctor before the BBC America series returns in the fall.

I don't know about you, but I will boldly go to my comic-book retailer in May and assimilate this item.

Avengers Assemble!

If you haven't heard they are adding a second credit cookie to The Avengers. The European release has the mid credit cookie that deals with the upcoming threat but they've added a second one at the end for North American audiences.

Remake me, Seymour!

One of the writers of the Spider-Man musical has been hired by Warner Bros to do a movie remake of the Little Shop of Horrors musical movie...

Do we really need a CG Audrey II?

"Me Tarzan you 50th attempt."

Constantin Films is making a motion capture Tarzan movie that will update the classic Edgar Rice Burroughs character.
Quote:
For example, Tarzan’s parents, billionaire adventurers, are now killed in airplane crash rather than being marooned with their child. And the movie’s villain is the CEO of Greystoke Energies, a man who took over the company from Tarzan’s deceased parents.

In the script, Jane is the daughter of an African guide and is committed to the conservation and preservation of the African jungle. She eventually works with Tarzan to defeat the mercenary army of Greystoke Energies.

But what happens if the train reaches Greystoke Towers?

A modern-day reboot of Tarzan could be pretty cool, done right. But the words 'mo-cap' made all my enthusiasm go away again.

Oh yeah, sure just because Conan and John Carter failed, there's no reason to suspect another classic pulp adventure hero won't succeed! Why don't we do Doc Savage while we're at it?

Or hey, I'm sure The Avengers is going to make an itch for big team movies, and misguided 80s nostalgia is always in...maybe they should just go all out and make Defenders of the Earth movie!

A Doc Savage movie has been in development hell for a long time; last I knew, Shane Black was attached to write and direct. Which actually sounds pretty awesome.

That was the cartoon with Flash Gordon, the Phantom, Mandrake the Magician, and some big, bald black guy kicking Emperor Ming's ass every week, right? Because now that you mention it...
