Supposedly they name checked Doc Savage, Remo Williams, and Allan Quatermain. Anyone seen Jake Speed?

(The Remo Williams film actually predated Jake Speed by about one year, and the Doc Savage film by about ten years. I would have found it interesting if Jake Speed namechecked Simon Templar, Bulldog Drummond or Dirk Pitt. Sadly, few adventure heroes to debut in the last thirty or forty years in prose and created for adults have had more than a couple of films. Many of the prominent adventure fiction franchises of the last thirty years derive from or started as children's entertainment-Star Wars, Harry Potter, perhaps Lord of the Rings, Doctor Who, etc.-so prominent literary properties created for adults and intended as a series to receive film series stand as a bit rare.)

I'm watching this movie right now. They did mention Remo and Mack Bolan up front, and then when they're talking about delivering their gear, they mention that Doc Savage used the shipping guys all the time. Jake: "Oh, Doc Savage! He's not even in the business anymore!" I haven't heard Quartermain's name as yet, but the movie's only about half over.

EDIT: Yeah, I didn't hear Quartermain named, but the sound quality was pretty muddy in parts, so I suppose I could have missed it.

Very cheesy movie, though. But fun. I do like how they tried to do a Flashdance reference in the African nightclub.

Thank you.

This person in his review asserted that the film Jake Speed namechecked Allan Quatermain.

"Speaking of fictional characters, the movie does this really annoying thing where it keeps referencing other mythical pulp adventure heroes. There's throwaway allusions to Remo Williams, Doc Savage, Allan Quartermain..."

Yeah, having just watched the film, I have to say, while the reviewer's right on many of the generalities, he's got enough details a smidge off, I don't doubt he got Quartermain's reference off. I mean, he was 19th century, wasn't he? 1885? As opposed to Doc Savage who was at least 1933, so that was 50 years previous to the movie, instead of 100. I'd be surprised if he went back that far. EDIT: Maybe the setting and the lion pit bring Quartermain to mind...

I'm rewatching the muddy parts right now, to be sure he wasn't mentioned. Just before I send it back to Netflix.

Incidentally, why is Quartermain so important to you?

Quatermain may stand as the closest to an iconic 19th century adventure hero series that stands firmly outside of the mystery/detective genre.
