Mrs Frisby and the Rats of NIMH movie in the works.
Secret of NIMH was the most influential movie that I ever saw in my life and changed the way my imagination worked. Part of the reason I'm a writer today is because of the influence of that movie.
The thought that its coming back to the screen in any form fills me with dread.
I haven't seen Illusionist or Lucky Ones, is that a director who can be trusted not to make it a bunch of gangsta talking cutesy CGI animals?

The Illusionist, at least, was a very pretty film and at least played at a period feel. I think they could have landed a lot worse directors than Neil Burger from seeing that film. Know nothing about The Lucky Ones.

Re: NIMH Remake?! - Say it ain't so!
No offense to those who like it, but I would love a NIHM remake. The book is terrific (and still reads okay if you're an adult) but the Bluth version really butchers it. In the book, for example, the bulk of the story is about the rats' initial escape from NIHM, which barely comes up in the film. Also, no one in the book has the Force.

Maybe so, but the Bluth film was quite a movie, even if it didn't focus on the same parts of the story as the book. While there's room for another adaptation, kids' movies in the '80s were a different animal than they are today.

I just can't get upset about a remake of a mediocre film that was unfaithful to the book it was based on.

I'd welcome another version. It's a good story (one of the few books I still recall from childhood), and if a remake gets it a new audience I'm all for it. Honestly, I remember being disappointed in the first version.

I do like the film, but I certainly would not be averse to a new one that bears some kind of resemblance to the novel. So I guess that puts me in line with mainstream opinion for once, at least on the basis of the responses so far.

Re: NIMH Remake?! - Say it ain't so!
I would vouch for the Illusionist. I did not expect to enjoy that at all, as I had watched The Prestige weeks before and had a sour taste in my mouth. But I would consider it to be a well made film. Not going to go down in the history books but it was surprisingly enjoyable.
As far as them making a remake. Go for it. If it sucks you'll only appreciate the original more and probably view it more because of it. And if it's good then there isn't any harm.
I would personally be shocked if they had cute CGI gangsta-talking animals. I would imagine he attempts to differentiate himself somewhere along the way apart from the time it was released but also to stick to the script for the sake of folks like you who were heavily influenced by NIMH.
I did see The Lucky Ones. I wasn't aware the same director made both of those films at the time. I didn't like it. I can't stand soldier melodramas. My family is a military family, grandpa, uncle, cousin and my little brother were/are in the military. In fact my little brother is in special forces and he got stabbed in the back yesterday during a training exercise with cavalry scouts. I find most soldier dramas horrible because the actual drama hits very close to home. When you don't see your little brother for two years and then he is sleeping on your couch while he is on leave trying to stab things in his sleep it has a different spin.

Huh? This appears to have the form of spam, but not the content. What is this, an art project?
